Steamrail Golden Ale - Hide em if you've got em

Well it was a rubbish looking Friday afternoon courtesy of some heavy rains, so what better way to give up on all the mowing that needs to be done (until the rain stops of course) and get stuck into some Steamrail Gold Digger Golden Ales? Once I get them out of work safely that is...

Yes on this monumentally wet workday (with visibility down to a mere 10 meters on the M1) after purchasing six of the best with a handy gift card thanks to my giving brother, my biggest concern was hiding them until the rest of the staff had gone home and then availing myself of any possible communal fridge space.

A rubbish day for working, lets go for beers instead.

In the past lunches have been known to go missing out of these fridges (cake never seems to last too long in there) so you could just imagine the unshakable temptation six fresh beers would hold when people around beer O clock suddenly went raiding for something to wash away their worries with.
So for the safety of my new purchase, the Golden Ales stayed safely hidden under my desk until the fridge coast was clear.
Seriously the things you have to do to keep a beer around here.

Thankfully they survived their little stay over at work, the car trip home and the pouring rain to be sampled with a relaxing game of Fable 3 on the Xbox 360 and my initial thoughts were - well nothing was blowing my hair back. Thankfully after my third one this weekend things have improved slightly.

HOW MUCH DID IT SET YOU BACK: $15 off my gift card at Vintage Cellars, down from $17 for a six pack. Incredibly the closest (and only Vintage Cellars) in my neck of the woods is a mere two blocks away from work and so I didn't mind a quick slog through the rain to get some beers.

INITIAL THOUGHTS: Again nothing was really jumping off the page with this beer. Smelt okay, tasted okay with no obvious taste characteristics emerging through each sip, perfectly drinkable but nothing really there for me to go 'Well one wasn't enough, back to the fridge we go for a repeat!'
With a meal it fared marginally better but I feel it really hits its stride outside on a warm to hot afternoon, by itself, fresh out of the fridge. In that situation it fits the bill a whole heap more and would probably suit the person slaving away on a hot bbq.
Basically it's a basic beer - it works but don't expect fireworks.

WHAT TO EAT WITH IT: Probably some Mexican food, more towards the chicken side of cooking than beef. Possibly some fish. Not so much with last nights roast pork with spiced potatoes.

WHAT'S IT IDEAL FOR?: Hot days, introducing people to beer, cooking a bbq.

It works better outside. When the sun and the thought of going back to work makes you sweat.

DID SOME MYSTERIOUS WOMAN SHOW UP TO TRY AND TAKE YOUR GOLD ONCE DRINKING IT LIKE THE LABEL TELLS THE STORY?: Other than my wife who wanted to know where her drinks were? No, still waiting. Should be any day now...

SCORE: 3 out of 5 rainy workdays
